About Us

The dojo, named AKEA, provides a hands-on practical approach to modern self-defense. It combines principles of Karate and Escrima into a well-rounded approach, established in 1987 by Mr. Glenn Harmaning. The system is based on the principles and dynamics of motion and physiology, encompassing all martial arts. It includes techniques and skills from various styles such as Chinese Kung-Fu, Korean Karate, Kenpo, Jujitsu, and Aikido, all geared toward use in and preparation for self-defense. The AKEA retains important traditions of historical Japanese/Okinawan karate, adhering to respect, discipline, personal honor, loyalty, and a sense of lineage. It preserves belt ranking traditions, the bow of respect, the practice of forms, standards of authority among black belt ranks, and methods of sparring that differ from sport fighting.
