About Us

Northampton Karate provides karate training that teaches people to become proficient in martial arts, gain self-defense techniques, and improve overall fitness. The dojo welcomes all folks who want to cultivate a mindfully engaged movement practice. They teach the traditional Okinawan Matsubayashi style of Shorin-ryu karate, a practice that emphasizes physical movement AND mindful engagement. Their classes are designed to teach the basic moves of karate, katas (forms, or a series of choreographed moves), and partner work, and they strive to follow the example set by the founder by training mindfully. They welcome all genders and fitness levels, and karate can be enjoyed for a lifetime, with students ranging from five years old to those in their 70s.
