About Us
Gingarte Capoeira is a community center that has been bringing the art and culture of the African diaspora to Chicago for 34 years. They cultivate communities through Capoeira, a unique martial art that combines elements of fight, dance, acrobatics, rhythm, music, and philosophy. Developed by African slaves, it served as a form of cultural expression and self-defense in opposition to the institution of slavery. The community center offers classes for kids and adults, teaching the benefits of Capoeira, which include physical, mental, and spiritual growth. They also organize events and rely on donations to complete renovations on their building. Capoeira is an art form that originated in Brazil and is characterized by its unique music, movement, and instruments. It is a supportive community that teaches confidence, compassion, tolerance, and self-respect.
