About Us
Seibukan Martial Arts is a dojo that teaches traditional Japanese swordsmanship, specifically the Toyama Ryu Batto Jutsu style. This style was established in 1925 and draws its techniques and philosophy from expert swordsmen of the past. The dojo offers weekly classes, where students learn basic handling techniques, kata (prearranged patterns), and tameshigiri (actual cutting with a sharp sword). They also practice kumitachi (two-man attack and defense) and gekken (free sparring with protective helmets and foam padded swords). The dojo is led by Tom Smyth Sensei, who has been training in Toyama Ryu since 1993 and has traveled to Japan to train and compete. The dojo is affiliated with various organizations, including the Zen Nihon Toyama Ryu Iaido Renmei and the Zen Nihon Batto Do Renmei. They offer introductory seminars and demonstrations for other martial arts schools and individuals interested in learning traditional Japanese swordsmanship.
