About Us

The Guildhall has been the focal point of Plympton's civic life since the thirteenth century, with the current structure dating back to 1688. It features granite columns and retains its historical charm, including a pillared arcade and an unchanged council chamber. The main hall was rebuilt in 1862, although it faced modernization challenges, such as being re-roofed with asbestos tiles in 1979. Historically, the Guildhall served as a court of law, with the mayor empowered to hold Civil Courts from 1692. Inside, portraits of local Councillors from the seventeenth century adorn the walls, alongside old prints of the town. Visitors wishing to explore the interior must seek permission from the Civic Centre in Plymouth.
