About Us
Kendo Kai Higashi was established in 1988 in Arnhem as an association for practicing kendo. In addition to kendo, various other forms of budo are practiced, such as Jodo, Iaido, and Katori Shinto Ryu Kenjutsu. These budo disciplines all originate from the samurai tradition. Kendo is a competitive form of Japanese sword fighting, akin to Western fencing. Iaido is practiced with a (semi)sharp sword, focusing on quickly drawing the sword to eliminate one or more opponents. Jodo is a Japanese form of stick fighting aimed at countering a swordsman. Katori Shinto Ryu Kenjutsu teaches sword techniques derived from the battlefield. At Kendo Kai Higashi, we emphasize passing on budo in its pure form in a relaxed yet disciplined atmosphere, contributing not only to physical development but also to the right mental attitude.
